B2B Design Agencies

B2B branding agencies

Doberman leads for B2B branding at 8.6, with Instrument level on 8.6 and the strongest live work, ahead of AKQA at 8.4 and Pentagram at 8.3. Brands are scored on how they survive in shipped sites and products, not on the identity deck.

    8.6 Composite score /10

Brand strategy and product depth in one team, the most complete branding brief here

    Description

Doberman is the strongest all-round branding engagement in this set, and its scores explain why. UX structural depth of 8.9 is the highest of the four agencies here, live product quality of 8.7 shows the work holds up once shipped, and research evidence of 8.5 suggests positioning rests on findings rather than taste. Its listed services pair Brand with Design strategy and Organisational design, which matters when the real problem is several product lines and sales teams telling different stories. Signals of 8.6, with Red Dot and Swedish Design Award recognition, add outside confirmation. The clearest limit is that Brand is one of four services rather than the whole practice, and the named clients (Spotify, IKEA, the Swedish Tax Agency) are not typical B2B buyers, so ask for a rebrand where the sales deck changed as well as the site. Post-handoff coherence, at 8.3, is its lowest score; contract for guideline support after launch.

    8.6 Composite score /10

Brand systems carried straight into the website and product, from one team

    Description

Instrument treats a brand as something built, not only drawn. Brand systems and campaign platforms sit beside product design and design systems in its services, so the identity, the website and the product interface can come from one team rather than two vendors. Live product quality of 9.0 is the highest of the four agencies here, and post-handoff coherence of 8.7 is also the best on this page, a good sign for a brand that a marketing team must keep consistent for years. Webby Awards and Communication Arts recognition back an independent signals score of 8.9. Google, Nike and Sonos are consumer names, so ask for a B2B rebrand it has rolled out. The limit is evidence: research at 7.9 is its weakest column, so test the positioning with your own buyers. Portland, 200 to 300 people, $180 to $260 an hour and a $150,000 minimum.

    8.4 Composite score /10

Built for a brand that must move across many markets and channels at once

    Description

AKQA suits a B2B brand that has to move across many markets, products and channels at once. Its record describes brand and product at scale, with Brand experience and Product design listed side by side, and a live product score of 8.7 says the brand survives contact with shipped software. Signals of 9.4 are the second highest here, backed by a Cannes Lions Grand Prix and D&AD recognition. A headcount of 4000 or more gives it capacity for a rollout that smaller studios cannot staff. The clearest limit is price and fit: $230 to $380 an hour and a $300,000 minimum make it the most expensive entry on this page, and research evidence of 7.9 is its weakest score, so positioning leans less on buyer evidence than on scale of execution. A mid-market company refreshing one identity would be paying for capacity it does not use, and should look at Doberman or Instrument instead.

The identity specialist, strongest where the system must run at scale

    Description

Pentagram is the identity specialist on this page: its record reads Identity, digital and spatial, and Brand identity heads its service list. Signals of 9.7 are the highest of the four, with D&AD Black Pencil and AIGA Medal recognition, and live product quality of 8.9 shows identity work carrying into shipped digital products, which is where this rubric looks. Post-handoff coherence of 8.6 is a good sign for a brand meant to outlive the studio. Clients such as Mastercard and Windows show comfort with systems that must run at scale. The clearest limit for a B2B buyer is that positioning and messaging do not appear among the listed services, and research evidence of 7.2 is its weakest score. Expect a strong visual system, and bring messaging work of your own or another partner. Rates run $250 to $400 an hour with a $200,000 minimum.

What B2B branding covers

B2B branding is four jobs that are often bought as one. A visual identity system: logo, type, colour and the rules for using them. Positioning and messaging: what the company says it is, to whom, and in which words. Brand architecture: how names and product lines relate, which becomes urgent after an acquisition or when a portfolio has grown by accident. And the rollout of all three across a website and a product interface, where a buyer actually meets the brand.

Agencies rarely do all four equally well. Some are identity houses, some are strategy firms with a design arm, and some are digital studios that will design an identity alongside a site. The four listed above sit at different points on that range, and the assessments say where.

How this page scores brand work

The six criteria and their weights were built to grade digital delivery: live product quality (20), UX structural depth (20), post-handoff coherence (20), research evidence (15), tested accessibility (15) and independent signals (10). None of them was written for identity work, and we do not pretend otherwise.

What we do instead is apply them to what a brand becomes once it ships. A brand is judged by how it survives in live products and sites, not by the identity deck. Live product quality asks whether the identity holds up in real interfaces. Post-handoff coherence, weighted as heavily as live quality, asks whether the brand stays consistent once the agency has left. Research evidence asks whether positioning was tested against buyers or simply presented.

This is a real limit. A logo or a messaging framework has no score of its own here, so a strong composite tells you an agency delivers well in digital channels, not that its taste suits your company. Read the assessments, and treat the scores as a way to compare evidence rather than a verdict on design quality.

What to ask before hiring

  • Who writes the messaging, and is it in the quoted fee?
  • Can you see a brand that has been live for two or more years, in a product and on a site, not only the launch case study?
  • What does handoff include: a guideline document, design tokens, component libraries, or a support period?
  • How many stakeholders sign off, and how are disagreements settled?
  • Who on the team has finished a rebrand for a company of your size?

Budget and sequencing matter as much as the shortlist. Brand work usually comes before a new site, and the two are easier to keep coherent when the same team, or two teams who talk, carry them. If the website is the larger part of your project, compare specialists on our B2B website design agencies page, and read how to choose a B2B design agency for the questions that apply to every engagement, not only branding.

Common questions

6

What does a B2B branding engagement cost?

Among the four agencies here, project minimums run from $120,000 at Doberman to $300,000 at AKQA, with Instrument at $150,000 and Pentagram at $200,000. Hourly rates span $170 to $400. Scope drives the spread: an identity alone costs less than identity, messaging and a rollout across site and product.

Should we rebrand or refresh?

Rebrand when the positioning is wrong: after an acquisition, a change of buyer, or a product line the old name no longer describes. Refresh when the strategy still holds and the identity simply looks dated. A refresh is mostly visual work and fits a smaller studio; a rebrand needs strategy and messaging in scope.

Do we do the brand first or the website first?

Brand first, at least the positioning and core identity, then the website. Building a site on an old identity means rebuilding it. The exception is a brand rolled out through the site, which suits a studio that does both, such as Instrument. Compare website specialists on our B2B website design agencies page before committing.

Does the agency that designs our identity also write our messaging?

Not necessarily. Doberman lists Design strategy and Brand among its services, but Pentagram and Instrument list no messaging or positioning work in their records. Ask each agency who writes the messaging, whether it is included in the fee, and what a finished messaging framework looks like.

How can a digital-delivery rubric judge a brand agency?

It judges the brand where buyers meet it: in shipped websites and products. Live product quality asks whether the identity survives real interfaces, and post-handoff coherence asks whether it stays consistent after the studio leaves. It does not grade the strategy deck or the logo itself.

Which agency suits brand architecture after an acquisition?

Doberman is the closest fit on the record, since its services include Organisational design alongside Brand and Design strategy. AKQA has the scale to roll out several merged brands across markets. Neither record names an acquisition project, so ask each for one it has finished.
