    9.1 Composite score /10

The strongest live product score in the directory, built for the largest programmes

    Description

Work & Co leads website design on the strongest live product quality in this directory, 9.7, and backs it with handoff at 9.2 and accessibility at 8.8, so what ships tends to stay coherent. What separates it from Instrument and Fuselab Creative is scale: 300 to 400 people, engineering in its service list, and clients such as Apple, IKEA and Marriott. That suits a buyer running many teams against one website. Since 2024 it has been part of Accenture Song. The limits are the entry ticket and the specialty. Its $250,000 minimum is the highest of the three, with rates to $350 an hour, and its stated focus is consumer apps and commerce, so ask for B2B examples. Research, at 8.4, is its lowest score.

    8.6 Composite score /10

The brand-led choice: a website and identity built by one team

    Description

Instrument ranks second in both website design and branding, because it treats the two as one job. Brand systems and campaign platforms sit beside product design and design systems in its services, so the identity and the site that carries it can come from the same team. Live product quality of 9.0 and handoff of 8.7 are both strong, and an independent signals score of 8.9 reflects Webby Awards and Communication Arts recognition. A CMO who wants the website to behave like an extension of the brand is the natural buyer. Rates of $180 to $260 an hour and a $150,000 minimum sit below Work & Co's and AKQA's. The limit is evidence: research at 7.9 and accessibility at 8.1 are its two lowest scores, so ask how it tests both.

The interface layer of B2B AI and data products, designed to ship and stay accessible

    Description

Fuselab Creative designs the layer of a B2B product that people actually use: dashboards, data and map visualisation, and the AI features inside enterprise software. That focus carries across its three use cases. On a website, it means pages that show a complex product working; in product and AI work, it means interfaces that ship and stay usable. Its handoff score of 9.8 and tested accessibility of 9.9 are the highest in this directory, with live product quality and research both at 9.4. That record suits clients such as NASA, NIH and Fiserv. Its rates of $100 to $149 an hour are also the lowest on this page, with a $25,000 minimum. The limits are reputation and scale: independent signals, at 7.4, is its lowest score, and a team of thirty to fifty people can be stretched by a very large programme.

Design systems and strategy, built to outlast the engagement

    Description

Clearleft posts a handoff score of 9.6, second only to Fuselab Creative's 9.8, and pairs it with UX depth of 9.2 and accessibility of 9.1. Its specialty is design systems and strategy, and its services include design leadership, which points to a buyer who will run the product themselves once the engagement ends. That is the difference from Fuselab Creative, which is built around specific data-heavy products, and from Blink UX, which leads with research. BBC, Sky and Virgin sit among its clients, from a team of twenty to thirty-five in Brighton. Its rates run $160 to $230 an hour, with a $60,000 minimum. The clearest limit is the live product column: 8.0 is the lowest of the three, so ask to see shipped work running in production, not only the strategy behind it.

    8.8 Composite score /10

The research specialist, with its own labs and recruiting firm

    Description

Blink UX takes third place in product design on evidence. Its research score of 9.6 is the highest of the three, ahead of Fuselab Creative at 9.4 and Clearleft at 8.9, and it runs its own usability labs and owns the participant-recruiting firm Insight Space, so studies with business users are run in-house. Tested accessibility of 9.4 also suits portals in health, finance and government. Microsoft, NASA and the Gates Foundation are among its clients, from a Seattle team of 150 to 200 founded in 2000. Its $25,000 minimum matches Fuselab Creative's, at $175 to $250 an hour. The limit is the shipped interface: live product quality of 8.3 is its lowest score, and research-led engagements often stop at findings, so put the design work and the handoff in the scope.

    8.6 Composite score /10

The most even scorer in branding, with strategy and product under one roof

    Description

Doberman leads the branding group because it has no weak column. Its six scores sit between 8.3 and 8.9, with UX depth highest at 8.9, and that evenness matters when a rebrand has to carry into a product. Its specialty is brand strategy and digital, and its services list design strategy, product design and organisational design beside brand. That separates it from Instrument, which carries brand into websites and campaigns, and from AKQA, which adds engineering at scale. Spotify, IKEA and the Swedish Tax Agency are among its clients, and its rates of $170 to $250 an hour and $120,000 minimum are the lowest of the three. The limit is the absence of a standout peak: independent signals, at 8.6, trails AKQA at 9.4 and Instrument at 8.9. Buyers who want a bold, distinctive mark rather than a considered system may find that too measured.

    8.4 Composite score /10

Brand and build at very large scale, with a top-tier external record

    Description

AKQA sits third, behind Doberman and Instrument, but it can carry a brand from strategy through to engineering, which neither of them lists. Its specialty is brand and product at scale, with more than four thousand people, and clients include Nike, Verizon and Santander. Independent signals of 9.4, backed by a Cannes Lions Grand Prix and D&AD recognition, is its top score, and live product quality of 8.7 matches Doberman. That suits a global programme where delivery capacity is the constraint. The limits are price and evidence. Its $300,000 minimum is the highest of the three, with rates of $230 to $380 an hour, and research at 7.9 is its lowest score, below Doberman at 8.5. Description

IDEO sits second in AI product design on the strength of research at 9.8 and independent signals at 9.9, the highest scores on either column in this directory. Its specialty is innovation and service design, and its services list design research, organisational design and product strategy. That makes it the choice when the open question is what an AI feature should do and who it should serve, ahead of how it should look. Ford, PepsiCo and Eli Lilly are among its clients, from a team of five hundred to seven hundred. The limits are price and fit. Rates of $250 to $400 an hour and a $250,000 minimum are the highest of the three, and unlike Artefact its services do not name AI product design. Handoff, at 8.4, is its lowest score.

AI design with responsible technology in its remit

    Description

Artefact and Fuselab Creative are the two of these three whose services name AI design, and Artefact adds responsible technology and data visualisation to it. Its specialty is AI and emerging technology, and its research score of 9.0 and UX depth of 8.8 support that focus. Microsoft, Google and Samsung are among its clients, and Fast Company Innovation by Design recognition sits behind it. Against IDEO it is cheaper, at $185 to $270 an hour with a $120,000 minimum, and closer to the product itself. The limits are on the delivery side. Handoff, at 8.0, is its lowest score and the lowest in the group, and live product quality of 8.5 trails Fuselab Creative and IDEO, both at 9.4. A buyer who needs the shipped interface to be the showpiece should compare its live work with both rivals before choosing.

How to read this directory

Each agency here is scored from 0 to 10 on six criteria: live product quality, UX structural depth, research evidence, tested accessibility, post-handoff coherence and independent signals. The weights are published and add up to 100. The order also reflects our editorial judgement of fit for each use case, so it does not always follow the composite. This page shows the top three for each of four use cases, and the use-case pages carry the full ranking and the longer write-ups.

Start with the deliverable, not the agency name. Read the one-line verdict and the “best for” phrase on each card, then look at the limit named in the assessment, because every agency here has one.

Where to go next

If you are still deciding what kind of agency you need, read how to choose a B2B design agency first. Earlier-stage teams should also see design agencies for B2B startups.

Common questions

8

Which use case fits my project?

Match the deliverable. A marketing site that must convert is website design. A SaaS product, platform or portal is product design. An identity, rebrand or messaging change is branding. AI features, copilots and AI-native products are AI product design. When two apply, start with the one that carries the larger budget.

How are the six criteria weighted?

Live product quality, UX structural depth and post-handoff coherence carry 20 points each, research evidence and tested accessibility 15 each, and independent signals, meaning recognition and awards, 10. The weights total 100, so shipped work, structure and what survives handoff count for far more than reputation in the final composite score.

How is the ranking ordered?

Each agency receives a composite from its six weighted criterion scores. The composite is the main input, but the order also reflects our editorial assessment of fit for each use case, such as specialty and track record in that kind of work. An agency with a higher composite can therefore sit lower in a use case that is less central to its work.

What do these agencies typically charge?

Across the nine, hourly rates run from $100 at Fuselab Creative to $400 at IDEO. Stated minimums run from $25,000 at Fuselab Creative and Blink UX to $300,000 at AKQA. Expect the larger, longer-established agencies to sit at the top of both ranges, and confirm any figure with the agency itself.

Why can an agency appear under more than one use case?

Agency work rarely fits one box. Instrument lists brand systems, product design and design systems, for example. Each use-case page ranks the agencies suited to that use case, so one whose work spans two can appear on both, with its position set on each page. This page shows only the top three of each.

How should I use the use-case pages?

Use this page to pick a use case, then open its page for the full ranking, the criterion scores, rates and minimum projects. Shortlist two or three agencies, then read the buyer guide on choosing an agency for the questions to ask each one before you request a proposal.

Does a bigger agency mean a better one?

No. Headcount here runs from 20 to 35 at Clearleft to more than 4,000 at AKQA, and Fuselab Creative posts the highest composite in product design with 30 to 50 people. Size changes what an agency can staff and what it charges, but headcount plays no part in the scores.

What if my budget is below these minimums?

The lowest minimum among these nine is $25,000, so an early-stage budget may fall short. The page on design agencies for B2B startups covers that situation, and the buyer guide on choosing a B2B design agency helps you decide what to ask for before you approach one.
